The stark division of some religious ideologies in the mid 19th century induced great concern among the citizens of southern Mumbai. To ensure proper surveillance of potential riots and crimes, police were implored by government officials to be aware of the communities of potential rioters. While the riots did indeed stop towards the end of the 19th century, the animosity between the religious communities of the lands still exists to some extent even today. The evolving nature of Mumbai and the way it identifies itself in has always been a fundamental source of potential conflict existing in the region. Vacher’s map indicates the preparation taken by law enforcement officials in surveying potential districts of conflict.
