Bandstand as an Icon
The Parkman Bandstand has in its 104 years of existence been host to many public events. It was first most known for its colonial themed puppet shows, but after those became irrelevant, concerts and rallies began being held in the bandstand. Currently in the 21st century, the bandstand is used for the Boston Freedom Rally (starting in 1992). The architectural structure of the monument stands out for being completely round and equal from all sides. If someone is speaking, though they may not face everyone in the audience, the sound will reflect equally off the dome and spread in all directions. Currently, the Boston Common Car Show is being held with the Parkman Bandstand as its center. Park Street station which is directly connected to one of the bandstand’s various arteries out. Meters away is the bustling Tremont St and downtown crossing which is where most of Boston’s shopping and commerce happen. However, all these developments in business and urban density is not a result of the Bandstand in any way, but rather the complete development of Boston Commons and its more important destinations (Frog Pond, Swan Boats).
