Conclusion

By looking backward, especially through the lens of what remains today, we can see that Yedikule is both a palimsest and a lieux de memoire; a palimsest in its ability to provide a view today into the different time periods which it has endured, and a leiux de memoire in the way those different time periods ascribed new meanings to the sight. Over time, we have seen that those new meanings ascribed to the sight have become more history conscious over time, and in post-modernity perhaps reflect most about our tendancy to reflect,to look back and try to understand the sight and what it tellls us about the history of Istnabul. Still, even in its most hyper-conscious iterations, the sight reflects the pulse of post-modern Istanbul, or at least a pulse, that has to do with his continued attempt to reconcile the past with the present, and to bring Istanbul into the contemporary world without losing its native spirit.
