Commemorating The Patriotic War of 1812 Across Moscow

In October 1812, with Moscow in ruin, a further Russian retreat, dwindling supplies, and no near victory in sight, Napoleon began his army’s long retreat out of Russia. Napoleon’s invasion and the nearly catastrophic results for the city, loom large in the collective memory in Moscow and Russia at large. As a result, all about Moscow, one confronts physical commemorations of the what the Russians call "The Patriotic War of 1812." This exhibit is intended to be a digital tour of sorts through Moscow, via the points around the city that memorialize that fateful winter. By studying these sights, their intended narratives, and the historical circumstances of their creation, we might be offered a unique angle into understand Moscow and its history.[1]
