Remembering Allies
Elphinstone Circle was the pre-Independence name for a large public garden surrounded by uniform European-style buildings, the Indian twin to London’s Park Crescent. It was renamed Horniman Circle immediately after Independence for Benjamin Guy Horniman, an Irish newspaper editor who supported Indian liberty movements until he was arrested by the British in 1919. The neo-classical ring of buildings, now the home to India’s first Starbucks cafe, looks over traditional festivals.
