Remembering Events
Gowalia Tank, the former name of the Mumbai park, is derived from Marathi for “cow owner”. After Independence, it has been renamed August Kranti Maidan, or “August Revolution Ground”. This was where Mahatma Gandhi gave his “Quit India” speech in 1942, a major step towards independence. The ground sits across from Gokuldas Tejpal, a cultural landmark where the All India Congress Committee had been created in the 1800s. A white tower monument marks where Gandhi gave his legendary speech.
