The British Leave

By 1947, the British Empire had lost much of their territorial holdings across the globe, but still retained much of South Asia, which was called the British Raj.  The Raj was governed under two political structures, British India (which included provinces and presidencies such as the Bombay Presidency ruled directly by the Crown) and Princely States, governed indirectly through Indian administrators.  Bombay Presidency included much of modern-day western Maharashtra.  When India finally gained independence, Bombay Presidency was shaped into Bombay State, of which Bombay was the capital.  Finally, in 1960, the city belonged to the new state of Maharashtra.  Certain aspects of the city have remained British, such as the double decker buses, while others have both intentionally and accidentally changed.
