Conclusion
Overall, the close reading of our main map of Bombay in 1855 led us to a few key conclusions. From looking at the key we could tell, with little guess work, that this map was used for some type of governmental purposes. The clear mentioning of the city being divided into six sections for the use of police work led us to that conclusion. We also know that the intention for this map was to keep a bird's eye on the population. Given the details on population densities and different religious temples/mosques/gather places and the recognition of the different neighborhoods, we can be sure that those who referenced this map were doing so while keeping in mind the culture of the area. In discussing the industrialization of the area, we know that things really started taking off for Bombay in the 1850s with cotton as we see railways and boat docks begin to develop in order to transport this commodity. We saw the evolution of Bombay from being a navigational spot on a map to becoming a hotspot for the international cotton industry.
