2007 was year that the only statue of Sherlock Holmes with Dr. Watson was erected. The statue, made of bronze, was erected by the British embassy near the embassy itself. As with many things, the physical act of erecting the statue is just that, physical. However, the political symbolism behind it is strong. The 21st century was an intense time for Moscow and Russia. It had been around a decade since the USSR had fallen, and it was a time of Westernization like no other. There is nothing more quintisentially important to British literature than Sherlock Holmes. Sherlock has nothing to do with Russia, but as a symbol of accepting Western culture, the statue was erected. The statue is so beloved by the people that it is said that sitting between Holmes and Watson brings good luck. Moscow takes another step through this statue to becoming closer to achieving an identity in the new era, one that takes a huge part of Western culture and acceptance.
