What Does It All Mean?
Istanbul's Theodosian Harbor has long been a site of importance to the city beginning from its naming as Constantinople up to the present day version of itself as Istanbul. Through Pierre Nora's lens of the lieux de memoire, the Theodosian Harbor can be identified as one of the longest lasting and important lieux de memoires pertaining to the city of Istanbul. Though it remained buried under silt from the Bosphorus for centuries, the discovery of the old port brings to light its importance to the Byzantine Empire as a crucial import and export area for commerce and culture, connected east and west the same way it continues to connect east and west through the Marmaray project and the Eurasia Tunnel project literally as well as still figuratively.
